Photo Walk: Timbers Log cabin, gatlinburg

March 06, 2018  •  Leave a Comment

After spending the morning at Smoky MTN Dulcimers and walking around the Morning Mist Village Shopping Center, we started to get hungry and then I noticed a sign across the street about a log cabin restaurant, so we investigated. In the back of the shopping center was Timbers Log Cabin Restaurant. It is a small mom & pop restaurant in a beautiful log cabin and the meals were anything but small. Both Cindy and I opted for the Chili Dog meals plus I had the homemade Navy Bean soup.

After the delicious belly-bustin' lunch. we talked with the owners Garry & Judy about their restaurant. After working for the hotel/restaurant businesses for over 30 years, Garry decided to open his own restaurant and they have been in that location for just over 1 year. His goal is to serve-up healthy meals cooked without salt and using only pure Olive Oil. Garry also talked about the Coalminer's breakfast he serves and it is the same breakfast his grandmother made every morning for his grandpa and dad before they headed off to work in the coalmines.

So, if you are in Gatlinburg, TN and are looking for some real good eats, then head out to 600 Glades Rd. to the Timbers Log Cabin Restaurant. You can search for them on Facebook at "Timbers Log Cabin Restaurant".

After leaving Imaging USA in Nashville, Cindy and I traveled to the Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg area of Eastern TN. Since Cindy is learning to play the Mountain dulcimer, we found a small Shoppe called Smoky Mtn Dulcimers in the Morning Mist Village Shopping Center on Glades Rd. The Shoppe belongs to Mark Edelman who has been in the business of making handcrafted dulcimers for over forty years as well as teaching private lessons. When Cindy started talking with Mark, he asked her to bring in her dulcimer so they could play together. When she was ready to strum her dulcimer, Mark and her began playing a beautiful rendition of Amazing Grace. Within a few seconds, Mark's business partner, Vic,  joined in on guitar. We now had a jam session going. What a treat it was to listen to the music produced by the dulcimers. Mark's shop is one small room where lessons are given, dulcimers are hand made and sold. Please enjoy some of the shots I captured that day of Mark's workshop and of Mark, Cindy and Vic in their jam session.

My apologies for not blogging the last couple of months. I am back and I have some blogs lined up which I hope you will find interesting.

In early January I attended PPA's Imaging USA with several thousand fellow photographers in Nashville, TN. Imaging USA was held at the Gaylord hotel & convention center in Opryland and was up to six days of classes and presentations for photography. The convention its self was three days with another three days of preconvention classes/workshops. The experience I had with Imaging USA was nothing less than fantastic. I am already looking forward to next year's convention which will be in Atlanta, GA.

Opryland is totally enclosed under a dome which includes a massive hotel, the convention center, nine acres of gardens and waterfalls, and 17 restaurants & bars. Upon check-in we were given a map of the grounds to find our room. To give you another idea of the enormous size of this place, walking from check-in to our room took over five minutes. I was glad I took advantage of the bellhop service. Please enjoy a few of the shots I captured walking around the gardens.

Photo Walk: Snow Hill, MD

November 13, 2017  •  Leave a Comment

This is the first in a series of planned blog posts for my photo walks around Snow Hill, MD. So, to kick things off, I thought I would feature some photos taken from the streets of the downtown area. You could literally drive through Snow Hill in three minutes or less without speeding. But if you do, you will miss a beautiful town that is rich in history, pride and tradition. A very brief history for those readers who are not in the local area. Snow Hill, located on the banks of the Pocomoke River, was established by English settlers in 1686, In its infancy, the town relied heavily on the waterway for trade and passenger service to the Western Shore, and in 1694, the town was designated a royal port by William & Mary of England.

In 1893 a fire destroyed Snow Hill's original downtown area and the early records of the town and county that were housed in the Courthouse. While the downtown business district was destroyed by the fire, many historic homes and public buildings remained, including some pre-Revolutionary War structures which are carefully preserved by Snow Hill residents today.

Today it is the county seat of Worcester County Maryland. The town is filled with small shops, galleries and restaurants occupying the historic buildings in the downtown area. Whether you rent a kayak from the Pocomoke River Canoe Co. and paddle down the beautiful Pocomoke river, or walk through the neighborhoods and enjoy the historic homes and churches, Snow Hill is a delight to visit. In upcoming posts, I will feature some of the merchants of Snow Hill, the Snow Hill Christmas parade as well as the holiday lights and displays. Historical information of Snow Hill was found in the Snow Hill website.

I went to Blackwater NWR a few days ago with a group of fellow photographers and due to deer management we could not access the main part of the refuge, but we were able to access another section. As usual the trip did not disappoint us as we all came away with some good shots. Please enjoy a few of my shots.
