Photo Walk: Deal Island

Somerset county is located on Maryland's lower Eastern shore, on the Chesapeake Bay. Somerset has three necks which extend out into the Tangier Sound of the Chesapeake Bay. At the end of the Northern neck is where Deal Island is located and the subject of this post. The middle and Southern necks will be covered in subsequent posts.

To reach Deal Island you will need to travel West on Deal Island Rd. from Princess Anne for about 11 miles. The drive will take you through the scenic 10,000 acre Deal Island Wildlife Management area. On Deal Island there are two locations where the workboats dock, the first area is at the North end of the island just as you cross the bridge and the second location is at the South end of the island at Wenona harbor. At both places you can walk the docks and watch the local watermen prepare to head out to the bay in the morning or watch them unload their catch in the late afternoon. This sleepy island becomes very busy every year on Labor Day weekend as all the in service skipjacks congregate  for the annual skipjack race. Around August the pre-race excitement begins to build as the Deal Island skipjacks are dry-docked for an new coat of paint and repairs for the upcoming race. I will be providing additional blog posts  in August to cover the race preparations as well as the Labor day weekend activities and race. But for now, please enjoy the photos I captured on this photo walk.
